A new study by the University of Malta will assess the socioeconomic impacts of protecting coastal and marine areas around Malta to guide future conservation policies.
Researchers at the University of Malta’s Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development are launching a study to evaluate the socioeconomic impacts of establishing and managing protected coastal and marine areas around Malta. The project will examine the effects of conservation measures on fisheries, tourism, and local communities, with the aim of providing evidence‑based recommendations for policymakers. If the results are positive, the study could support expanding protected areas and integrating climate‑adaptation strategies into maritime planning to enhance biodiversity and coastal resilience.
