Report: Finland's environment suffering from human activity
Habitat quality in Finland continues to decline, with nearly half of habitat types assessed as threatened.
A national environmental threat assessment coordinated by the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) finds that 48% of nearly 400 habitat types in Finland are now threatened, with forestry, drainage, land‑clearing for agriculture, construction and eutrophication identified as the main drivers. The share of threatened habitats is higher in southern Finland (59%) than in the north (32%). Climate change played a minor role historically except in fell areas but is expected to become a significant threat in the future.
