Peru Cancels 2026 Elections in Middle East Amid Regional Conflict

Peru cancels April 12 general elections in the Middle East over regional hostilities, citing security risks for expatriate voters and diplomatic missions.

Peru’s Foreign Ministry has ordered the cancellation of the April 12, 2026 general elections for Peruvian citizens in the Middle East, citing deteriorating security conditions linked to ongoing regional conflicts. Foreign Affairs Minister Hugo de Zela stated that conducting in‑person voting in several Gulf countries would endanger the Peruvian community and diplomatic staff. The decision was taken during a crisis session focused on Middle East operations and has been communicated to the National Office of Electoral Processes. Around 5,600 Peruvians reside in the region, with some already evacuated and others under active monitoring. This move reflects broader geopolitical tensions affecting Peru’s overseas electoral logistics and diplomatic posture.
