Oil slicks and debris wash ashore on southern coast after IRIS Dena incident
Orange oil slicks and debris from the torpedoed Iranian vessel IRIS Dena have reached beaches along Sri Lanka’s southern coast, prompting environmental monitoring and clean‑up operations.
Debris and pollutants from the IRIS Dena, an Iranian vessel torpedoed by a US submarine about 19 nautical miles from Sri Lanka’s southern coast, washed up on beaches in the southern belt. Orange slicks appeared on the beaches of Hikkaduwa and Dodanduwa, and oil barrels were seen ashore. The National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) dispatched a research team to conduct a dive survey and document coral and marine conditions. While no visible oil patches were immediately seen on corals and no dead fish were reported, scientists noted that biodiversity impacts may take time to manifest and require deeper study. Coastguard officers and scientists are investigating the potential for further pollution and long‑term ecological effects.
