Moldova issues environmental alert over Dniester pollution
Moldova has declared an environmental alert after an oil spill in the Dniester River threatens drinking water supplies and aquatic ecosystems.
Following a Russian missile strike on a Ukrainian hydropower plant, an oil spill has contaminated the Dnister River, prompting Moldova to issue an environmental alert. The pollution poses serious risks to drinking water sources serving multiple communities and to riverine ecosystems on both banks of the river. Moldovan authorities, in cooperation with Ukraine and Romania, are monitoring water quality and implementing emergency measures to safeguard public health and mitigate ecological damage. The government has also appealed to the European Union and international organizations for support and technical assistance to address the crisis and prevent further deterioration of the river environment.
