Midrand shootout disrupts major hijacking plot
Police intercepted a planned truck hijacking in Midrand, Gauteng, killing four suspects, wounding four, and arresting 19 during a large‑scale anti‑hijacking operation.
On Friday, a multi‑disciplinary police team swooped on a premises in President Park, Midrand, acting on a tip‑off that suspects planned to hijack a truck between Pretoria and Johannesburg. When officers entered, gunmen opened fire with rifles and handguns. Four suspects were shot dead and four wounded; 23 suspects in total were arrested, some of whom were already injured. Police seized three rifles, including an AK‑47, two pistols, and 15 vehicles, four of them suspected hijacked or stolen. Suspects face attempted murder, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, illegal firearm possession, and possession of stolen vehicles.
