The National Reserve Bank of Tonga has issued a warning that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East could trigger an inflationary shock for Tonga by raising global fuel prices and disrupting shipping costs. The Bank highlighted that while headline inflation has moderated recently, core inflation remains elevated and domestic price pressures could intensify if the geopolitical situation worsens. It has maintained a neutral monetary stance for the next six months to balance growth and inflation objectives, stressing that policy may be tightened if inflation spikes. The Bank also noted that foreign reserves remain adequate for now, but the medium-term outlook is clouded by uncertainty over global disruptions and their impact on Tonga’s trade and remittance flows.
