Measles outbreak spreading in Mexico with new cases in 2026
Mexico is experiencing an ongoing measles outbreak, with thousands of confirmed cases since 2025 and hundreds more in 2026, concentrated in Jalisco and other regions.
Since the start of 2025, Mexico has recorded 9,187 confirmed cases of measles, with nearly 30% of those cases occurring in the first part of 2026. The outbreak has particularly affected infants and young children. Jalisco state is the current epicenter, accounting for about 58% of the national total in 2026 with 1,603 confirmed cases. The country has reported a total of 28 measles‑related deaths since 2025, including two in early 2026. The government has urged vaccination, emphasizing that the relatively contained number of cases demonstrates the effectiveness of existing vaccination coverage, but officials warn that low vaccination rates in certain communities facilitate further spread, especially as the country prepares to host large numbers of visitors for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
