Malawi moves to withdraw troops from DRC
Malawi has begun withdrawing its troops from the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo following a ceasefire declaration.
President Lazarus Chakwera has directed the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) to start the process of withdrawing Malawian troops from the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo after a ceasefire was declared by the M23 rebels. The move comes after three MDF soldiers were killed in January during a peacekeeping mission. The decision aligns with a Southern African Development Community (Sadc) Troika Summit resolution calling for a ceasefire and peace negotiations, and with Sadc's Extraordinary Summit in Harare urging the repatriation of soldiers killed or injured in the DRC conflict.
