Lenacapavir HIV prevention rollout begins in Mbabane
Eswatini starts administering lenacapavir, a long-acting HIV prevention injection, from Mbabane as part of a national programme to curb new infections.
Eswatini has begun rolling out the new injectable HIV prevention drug lenacapavir from Mbabane, joining a small group of countries using this long‑acting option. Around 2,000 people have already received the jab since December under a pre‑rollout phase, and the government aims to extend availability to all 206 facilities currently offering PrEP. The launch aims to reduce new HIV infections in a country with one of the world’s highest prevalence rates, by providing a convenient alternative to daily oral prophylaxis.
