Latvia launches Copernicus atmosphere monitoring collaboration

Latvia has launched the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service National Collaboration Programme to enhance environmental and climate monitoring using satellite data.

On March 17, 2026, the University of Latvia began implementing the European Commission’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service National Collaboration Programme in Latvia, hosted at the Faculty of Science and Technology. This initiative integrates high‐quality atmospheric observation and forecast data into national decision‐making processes, supporting areas such as environmental protection, public health, energy planning, and climate adaptation. The programme strengthens Latvia’s capacity to monitor air quality, greenhouse gas emissions, and related environmental changes, helping policymakers design more effective climate and sustainability measures. It also fosters collaboration with the European Centre for Medium‑Range Weather Forecasts and the broader Copernicus Earth Observation component of the EU Space Programme.
