Kyrgyz Legislation Tightens Waste Management Rules

Kyrgyz lawmakers adopted stricter waste management rules to prevent pollution near Lake Issyk-Kul and stressed the risk of mudflows carrying garbage into the lake.

During a session of the Jogorku Kenesh on April 9, 2026, lawmakers addressed growing environmental concerns around Lake Issyk-Kul, warning that unregulated waste dumps in the Ton district could be washed into the lake by mudflows. Deputies highlighted illegal sites in villages like Bar-Bulak and Shor-Bulak where waste from multiple settlements is concentrated, increasing the risk of contamination during heavy rains. Officials emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of existing waste laws and better monitoring of disposal practices to safeguard the lake’s ecosystem.
