IMF approves new $8.1 billion loan package for Ukraine

The International Monetary Fund has approved a new $8.1 billion Extended Fund Facility for Ukraine to support its war‑affected economy and unlock further international aid.

The IMF board has approved a fresh 4‑year $8.1 billion Extended Fund Facility for Ukraine, aimed at bolstering macroeconomic stability amid ongoing conflict. The package is designed to help finance reconstruction, support reforms, and unlock larger external support such as the EU’s 90‑billion‑euro loan facility for 2026–2027, which is conditioned on IMF approval. While the IMF loan represents a modest share of Ukraine’s overall financing needs, it is critical for maintaining fiscal discipline, improving tax collection, and restoring investor confidence during wartime. Ukrainian authorities have committed to reforms including tighter tax rules and removal of certain wartime trade exemptions to secure the funds.
