Environmental and public health specialists in Afghanistan are warning that rising heat and abnormal rainfall patterns are drastically worsening the country’s environmental and health outlook. These conditions are accelerating glacier melt, drying soils, increasing land erosion, and triggering more frequent and severe dust storms. At the same time, reduced snowfall and precipitation have intensified droughts and water shortages, forcing communities to rely on unsafe water sources and raising the risk of waterborne diseases. The experts stress that, despite Afghanistan’s minimal contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions, the country is among the most vulnerable to climate change impacts and requires urgent international cooperation and climate‑resilient adaptation measures.
