Environmentalists have renewed calls on the Gambia government to rescind the allocation of a portion of Salagi Forest to GACH Global, citing the company’s history of environmental damage in the Kombo South area. The forest is ecologically sensitive and hosts critical infrastructure such as a water borehole supplying clean drinking water to residents in the Western and Kanifing areas. Environmental advocacy groups argue that the Minister lacks authority under the National Environment Management Act (NEMA) to allow GACH Global to bulldoze the vegetation without conducting an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), which is required for such projects. The risk of turning Salagi Forest into a business center is also highlighted, as the company’s previous site has already been converted into a commercial center.
