Cyclone Ditwah aftermath worsens environmental risks in Sri Lanka

Severe cyclone Ditwah has caused extensive landslides and flooding in Sri Lanka, damaging ecosystems and generating large volumes of debris and waste.

Cyclone Ditwah triggered devastating floods and landslides across Sri Lanka, particularly in ecologically sensitive mountain regions, overwhelming disaster response systems. The storm submerged farmland, damaged infrastructure, and generated massive amounts of construction debris and solid waste, much of which is being disposed of informally or burned, heightening environmental and health risks. Conservationists warn that fragile ecosystems in the Central Highlands and Knuckles Mountain Range face long‑term damage from erosion, sedimentation, and invasive species, while the government lacks a formal, science‑based framework to assess biodiversity impacts.
