Armenian Opposition Leader Claims More Azeri Gains

Armenian opposition leader Arman Tatoyan alleges further Azerbaijani military advances and newly fortified positions near Armenian border towns Vartenis and Jermuk.

Arman Tatoyan, a former human rights ombudsman and leader of the Wings of Unity opposition movement, presented satellite imagery at a news conference claiming that Azerbaijani forces have established new positions close to the Armenian border towns of Vartenis and Jermuk. He accuses Azerbaijan of incrementally seizing Armenian territory and describes the action as an ongoing invasion that undermines Armenian sovereignty. The Armenian government states that Azerbaijan continues to occupy over 200 square kilometers of Armenian land taken during border clashes in 2021 and 2022, while Baku denies crossing into Armenia during those confrontations. Tatoyan argues that recent fortification of these positions indicates that Azerbaijan has no intention of withdrawing, creating a persistent threat to Armenia’s territorial integrity.
