The environmental impacts of Israel’s war on Gaza are described as unprecedented, with an estimated 39 million tonnes of debris generated by the conflict. Water and sanitation systems have almost entirely collapsed, with five out of six solid waste management facilities in Gaza damaged and sewage contaminating beaches, coastal waters, soil, and freshwater. The destruction of solar panels and wastewater treatment plants has introduced heavy metals and pathogens into the environment, posing immediate and long‑term threats to human health, food security, and ecosystems. Critical infrastructure covering water supplies is reported to be more than 80% destroyed, contributing to irreversible damage to soil and aquifers, and exacerbating the risk of disease outbreaks.
