PMA presents bleak picture of country's health status
Pakistan Medical Association report highlights surge in HIV, diarrhoea, and other illnesses and urges health emergency declaration.
The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) released its annual report "Health of the Nation 2026," which details escalating health crises across Pakistan, including high neonatal and maternal mortality, water‑borne diseases, and a rapidly growing HIV epidemic. The report warns that Pakistan faces one of the fastest‑growing HIV epidemics in the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region, with a 200 percent increase in infections over 15 years. It also flags rising X‑DR typhoid in Karachi and interior Sindh, tied to contaminated water and rampant antibiotic misuse, and stresses that substandard water accounts for a large share of national illness and mortality.
