MM Exports vessel absconds from Maldives denying reef damage

A barge operated by MM Exports capsized on a reef near Fuvahmulah City, causing visible reef damage, then fled Maldivian waters before a full investigation could be completed.

A barge belonging to India’s Mohan Mutha Export (MM Export) capsized on a reef near Fuvahmulah City while transporting rock boulders for shore protection works. The vessel later left Maldivian waters without informing the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), despite clear photos and videos showing reef damage and unloaded boulders at the site. The EPA’s Director General reported that the company has a history of vessels capsizing on Maldivian reefs and has not paid previous fines, raising concerns about ongoing destruction of critical marine ecosystems.
