According to the Health Protection Agency, January 2026 saw a significant rise in infectious diseases across the Maldives compared to prior years. Dengue cases reached 647, up from 424 in January 2025, with the highest incidence in Vaavu, Kaafu, and Gaaf Alif atolls. Acute respiratory infections increased to 34,840 cases, with Alif Dhaal, Laamu, and Faafu atolls leading in per-capita rates. Viral fever cases rose to 12,195 and acute gastroenteritis to 7,792, evidencing a substantial surge in multiple illnesses that threatens public health and strains healthcare systems nationwide.
