Diarrhoea Surpasses Other Infections as Zim's Leading Health Threat
Zimbabwe faces a growing diarrhoea crisis, now the leading infectious and fatal disease.
Zimbabwe is experiencing a severe diarrhoea epidemic, with diarrhoea now surpassing influenza, dysentery, anthrax and dog bites as the leading cause of infection and death. For the week ending 9 November 2025, the Ministry of Health recorded 7,285 diarrhoea cases and three deaths, two of which occurred at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital and one at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals. Children under five accounted for 41% of new cases. Cumulatively, diarrhoea has reached 300,556 cases and 160 deaths nationwide, making it the primary contributor to the country's disease burden and highlighting critical gaps in water, sanitation and healthcare access.
