Laos implements power cuts, restricts overseas telecom services to tackle cybercrime
Laos enacts strict measures to curb cybercrime, including restricting international telecom services and cutting power to suspected hubs.
Laos has become the second country, after Thailand, to introduce a strict policy prohibiting telecommunications companies from extending their services internationally without prior approval. The Ministry of Technology and Communications issued a notice barring individuals, legal entities, and telecom and internet service providers from establishing international connections without authorization. The government also uses power cuts and targeted restrictions on overseas telecom services to disrupt suspected cybercrime hubs and scam operations, including those linked to organized call‑center fraud and financial scams targeting victims across East and Southeast Asia.
