Unscheduled audit reveals cybersecurity violations at Kazakhtelecom and Air Astana

Kazakhstan's Ministry of Information Security conducted an unscheduled audit of major telecom and airline operators, uncovering cybersecurity violations and leading to administrative penalties.

In an unscheduled audit, the Ministry of Information Security inspected Kazakhtelecom, Air Astana, and the Unified Accumulative Pension Fund for compliance with information security requirements. The Ministry found violations at Kazakhtelecom and Air Astana, bringing them to administrative responsibility and issuing corrective instructions with a one‑year deadline to fix deficiencies. The audit highlighted weaknesses in the country's critical infrastructure protection, including the fact that only 34% of 514 critical facilities are connected to operational information security centers. Officials also warned about data leakage risks and emphasized the need for continuous threat identification, hacking simulations, and reverse‑engineering work with telecom operators.
