Prosecutor General's Office warns of new WhatsApp hijacking threat

Kazakh Prosecutor General's Office alerts citizens to a new WhatsApp hijacking scheme called GhostPairing exploiting linked devices.

The Prosecutor General's Office of Kazakhstan has issued a warning about a new cyber threat targeting WhatsApp users. The method, known as GhostPairing, enables attackers to hijack WhatsApp accounts without needing to crack passwords or perform SIM‑swapping. Instead, they exploit the legitimate feature that allows users to link additional devices, thereby gaining legal access once the victim follows a link or starts a pairing process. The office stresses that the only way to detect such hijacking is to manually review the "Linked devices" section in WhatsApp and remove any unknown connections. Users are advised to treat unsolicited messages, calls, and notifications with caution; never enter WhatsApp verification codes on third‑party websites; enable two‑factor authentication; regularly check account activity; and use reputable security software.
