AU official urges South Sudan to adopt provisions on environmental security

Senior AU diplomat warns that climate‑related natural hazards and climate change pose major threats to lives, property and security in South Sudan.

African Union Senior Political Officer Prosper N. Addo urged the South Sudanese government to urgently integrate environmental security into its security sector reforms, citing the country’s extreme vulnerability to climate change and recurring natural hazards such as droughts and flooding. He noted that South Sudan is ranked among the most climate‑vulnerable countries globally and that recent floods since May 2024 have affected over 1.4 million people, destroying farmland, livestock and forcing mass displacement. Addo stressed that climate security risks are already harming livelihoods and exacerbating resource‑based conflicts, and called on national and international partners to support measures that link environmental protection with national security.
