Baghdad records world's worst air quality as heavy smoke engulfs the capital

Severe air pollution episode in Baghdad due to large‑scale waste fires and elevated sulfur dioxide emissions, leading to hazardous AQI levels and reported respiratory issues among residents.

Baghdad has recorded some of the world’s worst air quality, with a widespread and hazardous pollution episode triggered by large‑scale waste fires and elevated sulfur dioxide emissions. The Green Iraq Observatory stated that this was the most severe episode in a year, noting toxic compounds in the air and several residents reporting breathing difficulties, some requiring hospitalization. The Swiss monitoring platform IQAir previously recorded sulfur dioxide concentrations in Iraq at nearly eight times WHO guidelines and ranks Iraq 13th out of 138 countries for overall pollution. The Observatory criticized delayed and ineffective government measures and warned that continued deterioration could lead to recurring pollution waves unless immediate, sustainable actions are taken to reduce emissions and protect public health.
