AI-driven blackmail and image manipulation targeting women in Iraq

Abusers are using AI tools to create fake videos, cloned voices, and doctored images to blackmail and exploit women and youth in Iraq.

Across Iraq, women and young users are reporting escalating cases of AI‑enabled blackmail and exploitation, with perpetrators using readily available AI tools to generate fabricated videos, cloned voices, and altered images. These materials are then used to threaten, harass, or extort victims, often via social media and messaging platforms. The trend is fuelled by the proliferation of low‑cost or free AI apps and the country’s relatively low digital literacy, which makes it harder for victims to recognize and respond to such abuse. Iraqi advocacy groups note that this abuse disproportionately affects women and teenagers, who form a large share of Iraq’s internet‑using population.
