Georgian turbulence amid Russia’s attempts to regain influence on the country

With 20% of its territory occupied by Russia, Georgia's government is navigating difficult choices in domestic and foreign policy, often caught between competing options. Russian military presence in the separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia continues to exert pressure on Tbilisi, contributing to a cautious approach toward Moscow. While Russia publicly welcomes Georgia's restrained stance toward Ukraine, it retains the capacity and intent to use military force and to maintain managed destabilization in Georgia, particularly to obstruct deeper integration with Euro-Atlantic institutions.
