Slow and limited distribution of subsidized fertilizer is creating shortages and market distortions in Burundi’s agricultural sector.
The fertilizer product ‘Engrais Fomi’, intended to support farmers through subsidized distribution, is being delivered in very small quantities across the country. This gradual, trickle‑like rollout has left many agricultural producers without adequate inputs at critical planting times, increasing pressure on local prices and benefiting informal or black‑market fertilizer sellers. The constrained official supply risks undermining crop yields and household food security, especially in rural areas reliant on smallholder farming.
