Heavy rainfall washes large volumes of plastic waste through rivers and drainage channels into Lake Tanganyika, one of Africa’s largest freshwater lakes. Local officials and environmental organizations report that most of Bujumbura’s daily waste includes significant plastic content, which, when dumped in streets and open drains, is carried into the lake after storms. This pollution impairs fish reproduction and degrades the lake’s ecosystem, reducing fishers’ catches and threatening food security and income for communities dependent on the lake.
