Burundi faces severe economic stress due to prolonged border closures and foreign‑exchange shortages, constraining trade and inflating prices.
Since January 2024, Burundi has experienced a slow‑moving yet profound economic crisis triggered by a cascade of political decisions that have effectively isolated the landlocked country. The closure of its borders with Rwanda in January 2024 and later with the Democratic Republic of the Congo in December 2025 has severely disrupted trade routes and supply chains. Burundi’s acute foreign‑exchange shortage now hampers its ability to finance essential imports, resulting in supply ruptures and steep price hikes. Over 80% of the country’s external trade now must pass through Tanzania, deepening structural dependency and exposing the economy to renewed external shocks if that corridor faces disruptions.
