Water pollution in Kura and Araz rivers due to untreated industrial and domestic waste
Certain sections of the Kura and Araz rivers near Shikhli‑2 and Bahmanli settlements show pollutant concentrations several times above maximum permissible levels.
Recent monitoring data cited by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources indicate that phenol concentrations in the Kura river at Shikhli‑2 exceed the maximum permissible concentration by three times, while in the Araz river at Bahmanli they exceed it by two times. The primary cause is identified as domestic and industrial wastewater discharged into these watercourses without treatment, originating in Georgia and Armenia. These elevated levels represent a persistent chemical pollution threat to surface water quality and aquatic ecosystems in the affected stretches.
