Burkina Faso: Over 2,000 children diagnosed with suspected measles in nationwide outbreak
Nationwide measles outbreak in Burkina Faso has led to over 2,000 suspected cases among children, with seven deaths reported since November.
Since the measles outbreak began in November 2023, Burkina Faso has recorded more than 2,000 suspected measles cases, nearly as many as in all of 2023, with seven deaths. Children aged one to 15 make up 96% of cases, and the outbreak remains active, with roughly 1,700 cases reported in February alone. The highly contagious disease can cause complications such as blindness, pneumonia, and death if untreated. The government and partners have initiated prevention and care measures, including vaccination campaigns, while calling for additional healthcare support and community awareness to contain the epidemic.
