Damage to Armenia's environment in 2023 amounted to over AMD 4.88 billion
Regulatory body reports nearly AMD 4.9 billion in environmental damage in Armenia for 2023, primarily from mining, water use, construction and forestry sectors.
The head of the Nature and Subsoil Protection Inspection Body, Hovhannes Martirosyan, stated that about 4.9 billion drams worth of environmental damage was recorded in Armenia in 2023. The damage stemmed from violations in mining, water‑use, construction, and forestry activities. Inspectors conducted 155 scheduled and 137 unscheduled inspections, which resulted in the recovery of about 150 million drams of damage and prompted several criminal cases against violators. This event highlights ongoing and systemic environmental degradation linked to natural resource exploitation and weak enforcement.
