Large‑scale systemic corruption and serious economic crime remain a persistent threat in Botswana.
The government has warned that corruption and economic crime continue to pose significant risks to Botswana’s economy and institutions. President Boko highlighted the need to review the Corruption and Economic Crime Act and strengthen the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) with greater operational independence. The government also noted ongoing challenges with money‑laundering‑related risks and misuse of emerging financial technologies, indicating that large‑scale illicit financial activities remain a major criminal concern.
