Angola withdraws from peace mediation in eastern DRC conflict
Angola has formally ended its mediation role in the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo to redirect focus to broader African Union priorities.
The Angolan Presidency announced that Angola is withdrawing from its mediation mission in the war in eastern DRC, stating it is necessary to absolve itself of that responsibility while it concentrates on wider African Union agendas. The Angolan head of state handed over the mediation mantle to another African leader, although the Qatari‑led mediation process in eastern Congo will continue. Angola's foreign minister welcomed recent commitments by the DRC and Rwanda to de‑escalate tensions following the declared withdrawal of the M23 from Walikale, calling it an important step toward regional stability.
