WHO establishes PCR lab at Varna Regional Health Inspectorate
World Health Organization inaugurates a new PCR laboratory in Varna to improve infectious disease detection in Bulgaria, especially for vulnerable populations.
The World Health Organization has established a new polymerase chain reaction (PCR) laboratory at the Regional Health Inspectorate in Varna, Bulgaria. This facility enhances the region’s capacity to diagnose and respond to infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, COVID‑19, HIV, syphilis and other airborne and waterborne illnesses. The laboratory is part of an Asia‑Europe Foundation project funded by the Government of Japan, aimed at strengthening public health systems and outbreak response in Bulgaria. Special attention is given to the large population of Ukrainian refugees and seasonal workers who face barriers to regular health services. The upgraded molecular diagnostics will support faster surveillance, better patient care, and regional preparedness for outbreaks linked to high mobility, tourism and maritime activity.
