Liechtenstein responds to Russian recognition of separatist regions in Ukraine
Liechtenstein condemns potential Russian military escalation in Ukraine and reaffirms commitment to international law and EU‑aligned sanctions.
In the context of heightened tensions in Eastern Europe, Liechtenstein has stated that it would regard any Russian invasion of Ukraine as a serious violation of international law. The Liechtenstein Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Foreign Minister Dominique Hasler, emphasized that the principality, as a microstate without its own military capabilities, is particularly dependent on the respect of international law and the territorial integrity of states. Liechtenstein also indicated that it would align its sanctions policy with that of the European Union and Switzerland, should Russia formally recognize the separatist regions of Luhansk and Donetsk as independent entities. The principality views any redrawn borders in Europe achieved through force as unacceptable and stresses the importance of diplomatic efforts to de‑escalate the crisis.
