Bulgaria’s Board of Peace Controversy, 2026

Bulgaria’s controversial joining of the US‑led Board of Peace initiative sparks intense geopolitical backlash and internal debate over foreign policy alignment.

In March 2026, Bulgaria became one of the few European Union countries to join the contentious Board of Peace initiative launched by US President Donald Trump, triggering strong criticism from EU partners and domestic political actors. The move was pushed by former Prime Minister Rossen Zhelyazkov shortly before his government’s collapse amid massive nationwide protests. Caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov later walked back the decision, stating that membership reflected the preference of a sanctioned oligarch, not a national consensus, and that Parliament had yet to ratify it. Many EU states viewed participation as inconsistent with the UN Charter, complicating Bulgaria’s standing within the Union and deepening internal debates over sovereignty, sanctions compliance, and geopolitical alignment.
