Lost year for the severely ill sector in Kosovo
Extended leadership gaps and chronic understaffing in Kosovo's health institutions are creating systemic risks for patients with severe illnesses.
Multiple key institutions in Kosovo's health sector, including the University Clinical Service of Kosovo, the Kosovo Agency for Medical Products, and the Health Insurance Fund, have been led by acting officials for long periods or without permanent leadership. The Kosovo Agency for Medical Products has been without a chief for four years, faces persistent complaints about insufficient personnel and financial resources, and is responsible for ensuring the quality of all medical products entering Kosovo. This prolonged instability and lack of capacity increases the risk of medication and equipment quality failures, treatment delays, and a breakdown in oversight across the health system.
