Climate change and environmental crime, such as illegal logging and littering, are serious challenges to the ecosystem in Kosovo. These activities degrade natural resources, increase pollution levels, and reduce the ability of forests to act as carbon sinks, exacerbating climate impacts. KFOR monitors environmental crimes and assesses around 12 areas where toxic and radioactive materials are stored—many of which are inadequately managed—posing additional environmental and security risks.
