Measles cases rise in Kazakhstan amid low vaccination rates
Kazakhstan is experiencing a growing measles outbreak, especially among unvaccinated children, with over 1,300 cases recorded nationwide since the start of 2026.
Since the beginning of 2026, Kazakhstan has recorded 1,368 measles cases, the majority of them in children under 14 years old. Health authorities report that around 89% of the infected individuals had not received the measles vaccine, highlighting a significant gap in vaccination coverage. The outbreak remains active in nearly all regions of the country, with schools, kindergartens, public transport, and entertainment centers identified as potential hotspots for transmission. The National Public Health Center warns that low herd immunity and vaccine hesitancy are enabling the spread of measles.
