Geopolitical Conflict

Finland and Russia tensions flare over border migrant flows

Ongoing dispute over asylum seekers at the Finland–Russia border continues to strain bilateral relations, with Helsinki accusing Moscow of orchestrating a hybrid migration push.

Finland has kept its land border with Russia sealed since late 2023, citing a sustained flow of asylum seekers that Finnish authorities allege are being encouraged and directed by Moscow. Officials describe this as a deliberate hybrid attack aimed at destabilizing Finland’s internal security and public order, following Helsinki’s entry into NATO in 2023. The government has extended border closures indefinitely and introduced stricter entry rules, including provisions allowing border guards to refuse entry to asylum seekers crossing from Russia. The situation remains a flashpoint in Finland–Russia relations, with periodic reviews depending on the security and migration pressure.
