Habitat types in Finland continue to deteriorate under human pressure
New assessment shows rising share of threatened habitat types across Finland, especially in the south.
An updated environmental threat assessment coordinated by the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) reports that nearly half of Finland’s habitat types are now assessed as threatened. The most significant drivers include forestry, land‑use change, drainage, and eutrophication. The degradation trend is particularly pronounced in southern Finland, where over half of habitat types are threatened, while northern regions fare somewhat better. Climate change is expected to become a growing stressor in coming decades.
