Polluted air and loud noise in Tirana and other cities
Air pollution and noise levels in Tirana and several other Albanian cities remain above permitted norms, driven by traffic, construction, and low urban green cover.
An alternative monitoring report for 2025 presented by CoPlan within the GreenAL project indicates that air pollution and noise in Tirana and other Albanian cities continue to exceed legal limits. In Tirana, nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) exceeds the reference value of 40 mcg/m³ by three to four times at key monitoring points such as the Ring Road extension, the New Maternity Hospital, Ali Demi Street, Elbasan Street, and the Kristal Center area. The primary contributors are road traffic and combustion sources. The report also notes elevated noise levels linked to construction and traffic, and highlights pollution in Tirana’s Artificial Lake and surrounding water bodies due to untreated urban discharges and industrial activity.
