President describes alarming situation of plastic waste on Cabo Verde's coast

President José Maria Neves reports an alarming accumulation of plastic waste on Cabo Verde's coast, brought by Atlantic ocean currents, during a visit to the Santa Luzia nature reserve.

President José Maria Neves, in a letter following his mission on March 21 to the Integral Nature Reserve on the deserted island of Santa Luzia—considered the largest protected marine area in Cabo Verde—described an alarming situation of plastic pollution. Joined by representatives of the diplomatic corps, the United Nations Resident Coordinator, and environmental and civil society organisations, he witnessed the systematic accumulation of tons of plastic waste on the country's coast, carried in by Atlantic ocean currents. Neves emphasised that this concern transcends Cabo Verde's borders, highlighting the scale of marine plastic pollution affecting the national environment.
