Update on meningococcal disease outbreak linked to University of Kent

NHS England published an updated clinical and public health advice on the meningococcal disease outbreak affecting University of Kent students and Canterbury sixth-form pupils.

Public health authorities have updated guidance on the ongoing outbreak of invasive meningococcal disease in south-east England, centred on University of Kent and local school students. Since mid‑March 2026, multiple cases have been identified, with several linked to Club Chemistry in Canterbury. The outbreak has caused severe illness and a small number of deaths, prompting targeted antibiotic prophylaxis and vaccination efforts. NHS England’s latest update, issued on 6 April 2026, reinforces advice for affected individuals, clinicians, and public health teams on recognition, treatment, and prevention to limit further spread in the region.
