Spain launches new national heat‑adaptation plan amid early heatwave warning

Spain's government unveils a nationwide heat‑adaptation strategy following an unusually early heatwave alert in multiple regions, focusing on vulnerable populations and urban green spaces.

Spain's central government has announced a new national heat‑adaptation plan as health authorities issue an early heatwave warning for several regions, including Andalusia, Extremadura, and parts of central Spain. The plan targets hospitals, care homes, and densely populated urban areas, boosting measures such as expanded public water points, cooling refuges, and real‑time heat‑health alerts. It also supports local tree‑planting and green‑roof schemes to reduce the urban heat island effect. Officials cite rising frequency of extreme heat events linked to climate change as the main driver, aiming to prevent heat‑related deaths and protect outdoor workers and vulnerable residents ahead of summer. The plan follows a series of regional measures and is expected to be implemented before the end of April 2026.
