The Environmental Board (Keskonnaamet) has opened criminal proceedings after a large‑scale pollution incident in a South Estonian river caused the death of thousands of fish. Silage effluent from an AS Pajusi ASB farm leaked into the Umbusi river, seriously degrading water quality and causing widespread ecological harm. The pollution spread was contained on site, but the environmental impact is greater than initially estimated, and water quality is expected to take weeks to recover. Authorities are cooperating with the prosecutor’s office to determine the precise cause and monetary damage, and the operator may face fines or up to a year in jail while being required to compensate for the environmental damage.
